Google’s Search Results Can Now Be Rolled Up with ‘Katamari Damacy’ Easter Egg
For a while now, Google has been known for incorporating hidden surprises, such as games or animations, into its search engine. The latest addition to this trend is a mini-game that appears when you search for “Katamari” (as reported by Kotaku), a popular game series that was first released on the PlayStation 2. This game allows you to roll up everything on the page into a virtual ball, and can be accessed by clicking on the Katamari ball icon located on the right side of your screen. To play, simply use the arrow keys on your keyboard if you’re on a desktop or laptop, or your finger if you’re on a mobile device.
The easter egg likely refers to the recent remaster of We Love Katamari earlier this month. Originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005, the game was remastered as We Love Katamari Reroll+ Royal Reverie. The game was released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Steam.
Developed by Bandai Namco, the Katamari series revolves around a series of puzzle games where you play as the prince of all the cosmos. In the surreal series, you’re tasked with rolling up random objects like cats, cars and more – these balls will replace the stars in the sky that your father, the King of Cosmos, destroyed.
Fortunately, Google’s version is a little less stressful. There is no goal or time limit per se, you can just throw the Katamari ball to your heart’s content (or if you have nothing left to get). I spent more time than I’m willing to admit “testing” the game on my computer and it works pretty well in my experience. Mobile, on the other hand, is a bit rough. The game seems to have a fair amount of input lag, making the experience less desirable. But as a little easter egg, Katamari fans should still laugh at this one.
